GOOD: Good for China 

One of the advantages of having unchallenged central authority is that you can make big decisions quickly. And as I’ve mentioned in previous posts, that sort of power is something that China has that we in the US lack.

I take no position on that subject for the moment.

I believe the US is doing a great job of emulating China in many areas of control. But I don’t think the US is likely to do what China has done recently: It’s now illegal for China’s hundreds of millions of young people to spend more than a modest amount of time with online videogames.

The rules are strict: zero games during the school week, and only one hour a day on Fridays, weekends, and public holidays. Those are pretty much the rules that K applied for TV 30 years ago when our kids were little. It worked. They are all literate.

Prediction: Twenty years from now, China will not only have the world’s largest economy, it will have the world’s most literate population.

 

BAD: More Signs of Inflation 

The Fed’s inflation gauge, the so-called core PCE (personal consumption expenditures) price index, vaulted in the 12 months through July to levels not seen in 30 years. The Commerce Department said last week that the core PCE rose by 3.6% over the year in July, matching June’s level, which was an increase from 3.5% in May and 3.1% in April.

In a speech on Aug. 27, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell addressed inflationary pressures, acknowledging a “sharp run-up in inflation” driven by the rapid reopening of the economy, while reiterating his oft-repeated view that price pressures would moderate once supply-side shortages and bottlenecks further abate.

UNCERTAIN: Vaccination Cards for Green Cards 

Foreign immigrants living in the US will now have to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 if they want a green card, the CDC announced.

According to US federal law, foreigners who apply for a green card are required to be vaccinated against other diseases, including mumps, measles, rubella, hepatitis B, polio, and pertussis. “COVID-19 vaccination now meets the criteria for required vaccinations and is a requirement for applicants eligible for the vaccine,” the CDC stated on its website.

Negative screening for COVID-19 doesn’t guarantee that “green card applicants won’t have the disease when they become permanent residents,” the CDC added.

Of course, getting a vaccine doesn’t either, as we all now know.

In any case, people can apply for exemptions, including seeking a waiver on religious or moral grounds. And the requirement doesn’t include children under 12 years old.

GOOD: Moratorium Extension Overturned 

On Aug. 26, the US Supreme Court rejected a Biden-administration-supported, CDC-issued extension of its previous eviction moratorium. The justices sided with a group of realtors that brought the case to them, noting that without authorization from Congress, the CDC doesn’t have the authority to pass such rules in the first place.

“It would be one thing if Congress had specifically authorized the action that the CDC has taken. But that has not happened,” the court wrote. “Instead, the CDC has imposed a nationwide moratorium on evictions in reliance on a decades-old statute that authorizes it to implement measures like fumigation and pest extermination. It strains credulity to believe that this statute grants the CDC the sweeping authority that it asserts. If a federally imposed eviction moratorium is to continue, Congress must specifically authorize it.”

According to Census Bureau data from early August, about 3.5 million people in the country said they faced eviction in the next two months.

BAD: Bernie Sanders Is Running Out of Billionaires 

Bernie Sanders has been holding rallies to promote his spending bill, suggesting that it would be paid for by increasing taxes on the super-rich. “We are living in a nation where the people on the top are doing phenomenally well,” he told a crowd in Iowa. “They have so much money they don’t know what to do with it.”

He does. He will tax them more to pay for his bill.

Two problems with this plan:

According to the 2021 Forbes billionaire list, there are only 724 of them in the US. Their combined net worth at the time the list was compiled was $4.4 trillion. Add the just-passed $1 trillion “infrastructure bill” to Bernie’s $3.5 trillion bill (which some estimate will cost $5.5 trillion) and what you have is arithmetic that doesn’t work – even if you raise billionaires’ taxes to 99%.

 

UNCERTAIN: The Escape Continues 

Americans continue to flee big cities. Many are going to the suburbs that surround them, but many, too, are going further, to the more rural, more bucolic counties beyond suburbia.

The Brooking Institute tracks 240 of the so-called “exurbs.” In 2020, according to US Postal Service permanent-change-of-address data, net migration to these areas rose 37% in 2020.

GOOD: Police Chief Gets Suspended for Throwing a Pissyfit 

I am impatient on lines. I get upset when someone in front of me seems to be dithering away his time, unconscious of those behind him. And so, I can very much understand why this sheriff got upset. But his reaction was inexcusable. When you have a gun on your hip, and a virtual license to kill, you have to practice temperance. IMHO, he got what he deserved.

BAD: Twitter Suspends Alex Berenson Over Viral COVID-19 Tweets

Twitter “permanently” suspended former New York Times journalist and author Alex Berenson for “repeated violations” of its COVID-19 misinformation rules, a Twitter spokesperson told news outlets on Aug. 28.

Before his suspension, Berenson had often cited the results of an Israeli study that found that previous COVID-19 infection provides better protection against the Delta variant than any of the COVID-19 vaccines. In one such tweet, he quoted the study:

SARS-CoV-2-naive vaccines had a 13.06-fold increased risk for breakthrough infection with the Delta variant compared to those previously infected, when the first event (infection or vaccination) occurred during January and February of 2021.

“Information has never been more plentiful or easier to distribute,” he wrote in a Wall Street Journal op-ed. “Yet we are sliding into a new age of censorship and suppression, encouraged by technology giants and traditional media companies. As someone who’s been falsely characterized as a coronavirus ‘denier,’ I have seen this crisis firsthand.”

 

UNCERTAIN: Video Channel Restored, but Not Completely 

After closing a bestselling author/journalist’s video channel on Aug. 24, YouTube restored it less than a week later.

Naomi Wolf is the author of such books as The Beauty Myth: How Images of Beauty Are Used Against Women. She’s also a former advisor to Bill Clinton and Al Gore. But when she published evidence in DailyClout, her video channel, showing that gain-of-function research had been funded by the US government, YouTube shut her down.

In closing her channel, YouTube sent an email saying, “YouTube doesn’t allow claims about COVID-19 vaccinations that contradict expert consensus from local health authorities or the World Health Organization (WHO).”

Wolf countered that the video was not filled with contentious material. It included information already disseminated by Public Citizen, Axios, and Vanity Fair.

In an email time-stamped Aug. 26 at 7:47 p.m. Eastern Time, YouTube advised Wolf’s website that it had made a mistake and resurrected the video channel. But when it was restored, more than 300,000 views were removed from the view counter and thousands of subscribers disappeared, Wolf said.

Wolf said she is concerned that a big tech company like YouTube can silence “any small business owner, or any news outlet, or any reporter… and damage can be done to their business or their reputation at any time…. It’s not American to police speech in this way.”

Values and Aspirations

SS, a very successful investment analyst, once told me that certain things we cherish in our adolescence become valuable collectible assets when we hit our peak earning years. For my generation, this was true for baseball cards and Barbie dolls. For his generation, it was tru for surfboards and guitars. For every generation since the Great Generation, it’s been true for automobiles.
 
That was true for me. In fact, when I was in my 50s, I bought three vintage cars – a 1955 Thunderbird, a 1956 Belaire, a 1962 Corvette – all of which appreciated nicely.
 
I think something similar can be said about cultural fads. The books and movies that are cool in one’s early adolescence shape not just one’s early thoughts and feelings, but also have unconscious psychological imprints that influence our value systems later in life.

I was born in 1950. Thus, the 1960s was the decade that should have had that effect on me. And I think it did. In ways that are obvious and some that are not, my values and aspirations were in part formed by the books and movies that captured my interest back then.

Why it made my list: That memorable last moment on the bus. Life has no happy endings.

Plot:  Thomas (David Hemmings), a successful fashion photographer in 1960s London, believes that he inadvertently captured a murder on film. But did it really happen?

Reception: Rotten Tomatoes – 88% positive based on 50 reviews. “Exquisitely shot and simmering with unease, Michelangelo Antonioni’s Blow-Up is an enigma that invites audiences to luxuriate in the sensual atmosphere of 1960s London chic.”

Why it made my list: I loved everything about this movie – the story, the acting, the direction, the set designs, the costuming, and, best of all, the subject matter. It was my first exposure to metafiction and the first “perfect” movie I had ever seen.

 

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

Directed by Stanley Kubrick

Starring Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood, William Sylvester

Plot: The discovery of a mysterious artifact buried beneath the surface of the moon starts a search by Earth’s scientists for its origins (with help from supercomputer HAL 9000).

Reception: Rotten Tomatoes – 92% positive based on 113 reviews. “One of the most influential of all sci-fi films – and one of the most controversial – Stanley Kubrick’s 2001 is a delicate, poetic meditation on the ingenuity – and folly – of mankind.”

Why it made my list: A visual masterpiece. It opened my mind to the importance of photography, sound, and editing in film.

 

To Kill a Mockingbird (1962)

Directed by Robert Mulligan

Starring Gregory Peck, John Megna, Frank Overton

Plot: Atticus Finch (Gregory Peck), a lawyer in a small town in Alabama, defends a black man accused of raping a white woman. Amidst the drama of the trial, Atticus and his two children are forced to confront the blatant prejudice that surrounds them.

Reception: Rotten Tomatoes – 92% positive based on 66 reviews. “To Kill a Mockingbird is a textbook example of a message movie done right – sober-minded and earnest, but never letting its social conscience get in the way of gripping drama.”

Why it made my list: It gave me a visceral understanding of the evil and the horror of racism.

Why it made my list: It helped me understand the reality of circumstance and the possibility of compassion.

Plot: Based partly on a true story, the infamous duo robs banks, steals cars, and terrorizes small towns in the Depression-era Southwest.

Why it made my list: It made me want to be an outlaw, a want I never outgrew.

 

Lolita (1962)

Plot: In this tale of forbidden love, based on the novel by Vladimir Nabokov, Humbert Humbert (James Mason), a middle-aged British professor, is swept into a relationship with Charlotte Haze (Shelley Winters), his widowed and sexually famished landlady, whom he marries so that he can pursue her 14-year-old flirtatious daughter, Lolita (Sue Lyon), the object of his obsession.

Why it made my list: It was half as good as the book, which made it twice as good as 99% of the other movies made in that decade. The final scene was heartbreaking.

Plot: Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn), a young New York “escort,” meets Paul (George Peppard), a struggling writer and “kept man” who falls in love with her.

Why it made my list: It solidified my admiration for and infatuation with truly independent woman.

Why it made my list: It made me think, “This is cool. This is how Westerns should be made.”

Reception: Rotten Tomatoes – 98% positive based on 54 reviews. “Inventive, thought-provoking, and funny, 8 1/2represents the arguable peak of Federico Fellini’s many towering feats of cinema.”

Why it made my list: It introduced me to a different sort of film – one that was at once bewildering and mesmerizing.

 

The Apartment (1960)

Plot: C.C. Baxter (Jack Lemmon) finds himself falling for the woman (Shirley MacLaine’s Fran Kubelik) who is having an affair with his high-ranking boss.

Why it made my list: This felt new. Dangerous. Taboo. And yet true.

 

La Dolce Vita (1960)

Plot: Caught up in the “the sweet life” (la dolce vita) of early 1960s Rome, journalist Marcello Rubini (Marcello Mastroianni) spends his alcohol-fueled nights on a futile (and comedic) search for love and happiness.

Reception: Rotten Tomatoes – 96% positive based on 74 reviews. “An epic, breathtakingly stylish cinematic landmark, La Dolce Vita remains riveting in spite of – or perhaps because of – its sprawling length.”

Why it made my list: I was seduced by Marcello Mastroianni, Anita Ekberg, and most of all by Anouk Aimée. After that, I watched every film they were in.

 

Á Bout de Souffle (Breathless) (1960)

Directed by Jean-Luc Godard

Starring Jean-Paul Belmondo, Jean Seberg, Daniel Boulanger

Plot: A petty thief, Michel Poiccard (Jean-Paul Belmondo), steals a car, kills a policeman, and flees to Paris to hide. He takes refuge with a beautiful American student, Patricia Francini (Jean Seberg), and tries to talk her into helping him escape to Rome.

Reception: Rotten Tomatoes – 97% positive based on 69 reviews. “Breathless rewrote the rules of cinema – and more than 50 years after its arrival, Jean-Luc Godard’s paradigm-shifting classic remains every bit as vital.”

Why it made my list: Another genre of film and filmmaking that was thrilling to discover. I became an instant and forever Jean-Luc Godard fan.

 

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964)

Plot: Set in a charming 1950s French town, this musical tells the story of star-crossed lovers torn apart by distance and war.

Why it made my list: My first love affair with Catherine Deneuve.

 

Belle de Jour (1967)

Starring Catherine Deneuve, Jean Sorel, Michel Piccoli

Plot: Séverine (Catherine Deneuve) and Pierre (Jean Sorel) appear to have a picture-perfect marriage. In reality, though she loves her husband, the beautiful Séverine is frigid. She fantasizes about sexual encounters with complete strangers, and eventually becomes a high-class prostitute during the day, while her husband is at work. The “action” of the film, which is highly erotic, takes place almost entirely in her imagination.

Reception: Rotten Tomatoes – 95% positive based on 57 reviews. “Belle de Jour is a film that’s ambiguous and alluring in equal measure, and while that can be alienating for modern audiences, this is a film that is still radical, thought-provoking, and enticing.”

Why it made my list: Now I get to see Deneuve as a femme de la nuit?

 

Planet of the Apes (1968)

Starring Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowall, Kim Hunter

Plot: In this science-fiction classic, three astronauts crash-land on a planet ruled by apes.

Reception: Rotten Tomatoes – 86% positive based on 59 reviews. “Planet of the Apes raises thought-provoking questions about our culture without letting social commentary get in the way of the drama and action.”

Why it made my list: By today’s standards, it is primitive in almost every way. Back then, it was a technological wonder.

 

The Great Escape (1963)

Directed by John Sturges

Starring Steve McQueen, James Garner, Richard Attenborough

Plot: Based on a true story, The Great Escape depicts an ambitious mass escape by POWs from a German prison camp during World War II.

Reception: Rotten Tomatoes – 94% positive based on 49 reviews. “This is one of the all-time great war movies, a POW adventure from director John Sturges that celebrates the indomitable spirit of the Allied forces even when their backs were to the wall.”

Why it made my list: Great plot. Great characters. Steve McQueen.

 

Night of the Living Dead (1968)

Directed by George A. Romero

Starring Duane Jones, Judith O’Dea, Karl Hardman

Plot: Chaos and fear descend on the Pennsylvania countryside when the dead inexplicably come back to life.

Reception: Rotten Tomatoes – 97% positive based on 70 reviews. “If [Romero’s] original vision of the undead looks dulled by today’s standards, his embedded political commentary on racism feels just as sharp.”

Why it made my list: My introduction to zombies. What theatrical invention was ever cooler than zombies? And how can you possibly top a George A. Romero depiction of them?

 

Psycho (1960)

Directed by Alfred Hitchcock

Starring Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh, Vera Miles

Plot: Marion Crane (Janet Leigh), a secretary fed up with her job, impulsively steals $40,000 from her boss and goes on the run. Night falls and a heavy rainstorm forces her to seek shelter in the creepy looking Bates Motel run by Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins), a painfully shy man with a dark secret.

Reception: Rotten Tomatoes – 96% positive based on 104 reviews. “Infamous for its shower scene, but immortal for its contribution to the horror genre. Because Psycho was filmed with tact, grace, and art, Hitchcock didn’t just create modern horror, he validated it.”

Why it made my list: My introduction to Alfred Hitchcock and his genius in setting scenes.

 

The Birds (1963)

Directed by Alfred Hitchcock

Starring Rod Taylor, Tippi Hedren, Jessica Tandy

Plot: Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren) and Mitch Brenner (Rod Taylor) “meet cute” in a pet shop. Finding him attractive, she follows him to his hometown, and love blossoms. But then, suddenly and inexplicably, the birds in the town begin to act strangely, gathering by the thousands and viciously attacking people.

Reception: Rotten Tomatoes – 95% positive based on 57 reviews. “Hitchcock prolongs his prelude to horror for more than half the film, playing with audience suspense with comedy and romance while he sets his stage. The horror when it comes is a hair-raiser.”

Why it made my list: Birds? I was sure I wouldn’t be scared, but this movie gave me nightmares. I had to think about how Hitchcock did that. I’m still thinking about it.

 

Dr. No (1962)

Directed by Terence Young

Starring Sean Connery, Ursula Andress, Bernard Lee

Plot: British secret agent 007, James Bond (Sean Connery), is assigned to the West Indies to investigate the mysterious disappearance of another British agent. He encounters deadly assassins, femme fatales, and a notorious megalomaniac.

Reception: Rotten Tomatoes – 95% positive based on 59 reviews. “Featuring plenty of the humor, action, and escapist thrills the series would become known for, Dr. No kicks off the Bond franchise in style.”

Why it made my list: I had read several James Bond books before I saw Dr. No, and when I saw Sean Connery, I knew he was the only actor that could possibly play that role for me. He still is.

 

The Hustler (1961)

Directed by Robert Rossen

Starring Paul Newman, Jackie Gleason, Piper Laurie

Plot: “Fast Eddie” Felson (Paul Newman), a second-rate pool shark attempting to break into the lucrative world of professional pool hustling, falls for a woman with self-destructive impulses almost as bad as his own.

Reception: Rotten Tomatoes – 98% positive based on 45 reviews. “Paul Newman and Jackie Gleason give iconic performances in this dark, morally complex tale of redemption.”

Why it made my list: Cool Hand Luke. And now Fast Eddie? Paul Newman defined not just integrity but cool.

Plot: At the turn of the 20th century in Wyoming, Butch Cassidy (Paul Newman), the leader of a band of outlaws, and his sidekick, the Sundance Kid (Robert Redford), flee to Bolivia after a train robbery goes awry.

Reception: Rotten Tomatoes – 88% positive based on 52 reviews. “With its iconic pairing of Paul Newman and Robert Redford, jaunty screenplay, and Burt Bacharach score, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid has gone down as among the defining moments in late-60s American cinema.”

Why it made my list: Okay, there must have been a Paul Newman movie I didn’t love back then. I just can’t remember one. And Robert Redford did a pretty good job, too.

 

The Time Machine (2002)

Directed by George Pal

Starring Rod Taylor, Alan Young, Yvette Mimieux

Plot: Inspired by the H.G. Wells novel, The Time Machine, is a cautionary tale. Scientist and inventor George (Rod Taylor) builds a time machine in the year 1900 and uses it to journey thousands of years into the future, discovering a dismal post-apocalyptic world.

Reception: Rotten Tomatoes – 76% positive based on 38 reviews. “Its campy flourishes tend to subdue its dramatic stakes, but The Time Machine brings H.G. Wells’ story to life with plenty of sci-fi charm and a colorful sense of visual design.”

Why it made my list: I believed it. I was sure it would come true. And it did.

 

In the Heat of the Night (1967)

Directed by Norman Jewison

Starring Sidney Poitier, Rod Steiger, Warren Oates

Plot: After the murder of a wealthy white factory owner, Mississippi police accuse African-American detective Virgil Tibbs (Sidney Poitier) of committing the crime. After Tibbs proves his own innocence, Chief of Police Bill Gillespie (Rod Steiger) reluctantly joins forces with him to track down the real killer.

Reception: Rotten Tomatoes – 95% positive based on 55 reviews. “Tense, funny, and thought-provoking all at once, and lifted by strong performances from Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger, director Norman Jewison’s look at murder and racism in small-town America continues to resonate today.”

Why it made my list: Racism was (and is) real. This movie helped me understand it in a different, more topical way than did To Kill a Mockingbird.

 

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1966)

Directed by Sergio Leone

Starring Clint Eastwood, Eli Wallach, Lee Van Cleef

Plot: Set in the Southwest during the Civil War, an unlikely trio (a professional gun slinger, a hitman, and a wanted outlaw) set out to find $200,000 worth of buried gold coins.

Reception: Rotten Tomatoes – 97% positive based on 77 reviews. “Arguably the greatest of the spaghetti westerns, this epic features a compelling story, memorable performances, breathtaking landscapes, and a haunting score.”

Why it made my list: It set the standard for a great B-Movie genre. And it introduced me to Clint Eastwood and his amazing career.

More About the F-Word… 

Responding to the issue in which I agreed with a reader that the F-Word doesn’t suit us as we get older, AS wrote:

I don’t disagree that people our age shouldn’t use the word fuck, even though I do. I don’t feel good about it and will try to stop.

I was hoping – even excited – to read your examples of substitute words. I expected creativity. But “Fudge!” Come on! How disappointing!

Fair enough, AS. I did some research, and discovered that fuck can be used in almost unlimited ways. As a noun, a verb, an adjective, an adverb, and (most commonly, perhaps) as an exclamation.

As someone once said: “It’s the only fucking word you can use in any fucking situation and still make sense.”

 

Substitutes for Fuck Used as an Exclamation, an Expression of Frustration 

Focusing on fuck as an exclamation, I found dozens of possibilities. Some of them I rejected as wimpy or puerile. (Shoot! Darn! Shucks! Sugar! Fiddlesticks!)

That left plenty more – most of which, interestingly, begin with three consonants: D, B, or F.

 * D-Words: damn, dammit, damnation, drat, dashit, dagnabit, doggonit

* B-Words: bugger, bullocks, blast, blastit, bloody hell, blinking hell, botheration

* F-Words: feck, fook, frik, fricking hell, flipping hell, frig

My favorites of the above are mostly B-Words. These I will do my best to work into future conversations:

* Bullocks!

* Blinking Hell!

* Botheration!

 

Substitutes for Fuck Used as a Noun, as an Epithet of Denigration

I eliminated many words that were perhaps not quite as vulgar as fuck, but vulgar enough to be inexcusable at my age, including asshole, animal, scumbag, and shithead. I also eliminated many that were less vulgar but also less forceful, such as rogue, rascal, skunk, cad, villain, brute, beast, bastard, rat, jerk, and louse.

Again, among the worthy candidates, four initial letters predominate:

* B-Words: blackguard, bugger, butthole, blighter, bleeder, boor, buzzard, bounder

* C-Words: cur, churl, chuff, creep, cretin, crud clown

* S-Words: snake, sod, scrote, scrotum, schmuck, sleveen, spalpeen

* R-Words: reprobate, ratbag, rat fink, rotter, toe rag, rapscallion

 

My favorites of these, in order of preference:

* blighter

* bounder

* ratbag

* rapscallion

Having pontificated, I admit that there are many instances in literature and in the movies where the F-Word has been suitably put. The test is whether it feels vulgar. (It should not.) And whether one of the above-listed substitutes would do as well. (Again, it should not.)

 

Acceptable Uses of the F-Word in Literature 

A few examples:

* From Trainspotting, by Irvine Welsh (1993) – “Choose us. Choose life. Choose mortgage payments; choose washing machines; choose cars; choose sitting on a couch watching mind-numbing and spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing fuckin junk food intae yir mooth. Choose rotting away, pishing and shiteing yersel in a home, a total fuckin embarrassment tae the selfish, fucked-up brats ye’ve produced. Choose life.”

* From How Late It Was, How Late, by James Kelman (1994) – “Ach it was hopeless. That was what ye felt. These bastards. What can ye do but. Except start again so he started again. That was what he did he started again… ye just plough on, ye plough on, ye just fucking plough on… ye just fucking push ahead, ye get fucking on with it.”

* From This Be the Verse, by Philip Larkin (1971) – “They fuck you up, your mum and dad. / They may not mean to, but they do. / They fill you up with the faults they had / And add some extra, just for you.”

Interestingly, the F-Word has not only survived in literature, it has become a suitable word for book titles. A quick search of Amazon top sellers resulted in 25 matches. Last year, The Wall Street Journal reported that profane titles were “flooding bookstores” and causing dilemmas for booksellers and marketers.

For example:

* Self-improvement Books – The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck (A good book. I read it.)… I Used to Be a Miserable Fuck: An Everyman’s Guide to a Meaningful Life (I intend to read it.)… F*ck Feeling; Unf*ck Your Brain

* Adult Coloring Books – Calm the F*ck Down. I’m ColoringGo F*ck Yourself, I’m Coloring

* Cookbooks – What the F*ck Should I Make for Dinner?50 Ways to Eat Cock

* Children’s Books – Go the F*ck to Sleep (a 2011 best seller)

* Diet Books – The F*ck It Diet

* Etiquette Guides – Good Manners for Nice People Who Sometimes Say F*ck

* Celebrity Memoirs – Kelly Osbourne’s There Is No F*cking Secret: Letters From a Badass Bitch

This trend can partly be attributed to the rise in online sales for such titles. (The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck has spent 105 weeks on the NYT bestseller list for advice and how-to books. The title is represented as The Subtle Art of Not Giving a —————.)

 

Acceptable Uses of the F-Word in Movies and TV 

In the movie and TV industry, the F-word has been a staple for decades.

F-U-C-K! 

Since AS got me started on all this with his email, I shared the above with him to get his input before posting it here.

“That was great,” AS wrote back, “and quite extensive. I believe the origin of the word fuck, came from the English. They arrested people for being involved in sexual encounters that were, at the time, considered illegal.They were sent to prison for unlawful carnal knowledge. Get it? For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. Or so I’ve been told.”

Fuck is also said to stand for Fornication Under the Command of the King, presumably a decree intended to repopulate England after it was depopulated by the plague.

Neither one is true.

In fact, there are many fake stories about the origins of certain words as acronyms.

“Posh” comes to mind. For many years, I not only believed but propagated the myth that it was for Port Out, Starboard Home, a term used for the best (and most expensive) cabins on sea voyages.

I didn’t want to give that one up until I actually looked it up. Reality:

Early 20th century. Perhaps from slang “posh,” denoting either a dandy or a coin of small value. There is no evidence to support the folk etymology that posh is formed from the initials of Port Out Starboard Home (referring to the more comfortable accommodations, out of the heat of the sun, on ships between England and India).
